Medical Assistant Career Outlook

According to Labor Bureau statistics, employment of medical assistants is expected to grow 34% from 2008 to 2018, one of the highest growth rates for all occupations. (see 30 Fastest Growing Health Care Jobs.)

This demand is being spurred by the ever-changing frontier of technology and related advancements in the medical field, which makes new medical procedures more readily available to the general public. In addition, increased life expectancy and the growing population of elderly are creating more demand for procedures in general, which leads to more demand for hospital personnel.

Aside from industry growth in hospitals, the medical field is also benefiting from the growing number of group practices and clinics operating in the U.S., which is creating an increased need for qualified support personnel in those areas — especially medical assistants who can handle both clinical and administrative duties. Many medical assistants will find a particularly robust job market in outpatient care, as this is one of the most expansive medical domains.

The Labor Bureau predicts placement opportunities to be the best for MAs with formal training, experience and proper certification.
